Down the TBR Hole #1

08/13/2022     Charli     Meme

So I found Down the TBR Hole on Pages & Plots, but I’ve also seen it on Kerri McBookNerd, and Read to Ramble. It was originally created by Lost in a Story (blog unavailable).

Basically you go to Goodreads, look at your “Want to Read” shelf, order it in ascending order of when the books were added, then take the first 5 (or more) books, read the synopsis and then decide whether or not to keep the book in your TBR.

The Books

This week I had 159 books in my “Want to Read” shelf on Goodreads. Let’s see how many I can remove this week.

WINNER OF THE ANTHONY/BILL CRIDER AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL IN A SERIES

Private investigator Kinsey Millhone confronts her darkest and most disturbing case in this #1 New York Times bestseller from Sue Grafton.

In 1979, four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a fourteen-year-old classmate--and film the attack. Not long after, the tape goes missing and the suspected thief, a fellow classmate, is murdered. In the investigation that follows, one boy turns state's evidence and two of his peers are convicted. But the ringleader escapes without a trace.

Now it's 1989 and one of the perpetrators, Fritz McCabe, has been released from prison. Moody, unrepentant, and angry, he is a virtual prisoner of his ever-watchful parents--until a copy of the missing tape arrives with a ransom demand. That's when the McCabes call Kinsey Millhone for help. As she is drawn into their family drama, she keeps a watchful eye on Fritz. But he's not the only one being haunted by the past. A vicious sociopath with a grudge against Millhone may be leaving traces of himself for her to find...

This book was actually gifted to me by a good friend of mine. I haven’t finished it yet, but I love Sue Grafton and fully plan to finish it. Besides, now that the author has passed away, I can’t bear to remove it from my TBR.1I’m a sap that way.

Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.

More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss—a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed.

The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.

Powerful, poignant, and utterly gripping, packed with indelible characters and unforgettable twists, Pretty Girls is a masterful novel from one of the finest writers working today.

I’m a huge Karin Slaughter fan, so I’m going to have to keep this one. I own the book, I just don’t know what I did with it at the moment.2I don’t have enough shelf space for all my books, so sometimes they’re hiding.

So there you have it. I’m keeping four and getting rid of one. Not too bad. Let’s see how this goes next week.
